Be alert to protect yourself from possible theft, especially in public transport. Tourist sites, cafés, bars, terraces, restaurants and spaces with a high number of people, are also the target of pickpockets. Avoid exhibit valuables (smartphones, for example) or high amounts of money.
If you are a victim of theft, you should go to a police station of the Public Security Police (PSP) and file a complaint.
If you were the victim of a crime, you must report it to the authorities.
You can do it on-line via the Electronic Complaint website or in person at the nearest police station.
In emergencies where an immediate response from the security forces or services is required, including when the crime is being committed, you should immediately contact the National Emergency Number (112).

The policemen are recognized by their dark blue or light blue uniforms that have “Polícia” written on the back. They sometimes wear (especially in traffic actions) a reflective vest of yellow or orange colour that has “Polícia” written on the back.
